What I’m reading

Again it’s been awhile. Since reading The Portable Dorothy Parker I have read:

The thing around your neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

This is a brilliant and provoking collection of short stories. I had never heard of the author and now am glad I have as I will be reading more of her stories.

Curfewed night: One Kashmiri journalist’s frontline account of life, love and war in his homeland by Basharat Peer:

I really enjoyed this. Didn’t know much about the situation in Kashmir and the history behind this and this book gave a good understanding of it while also providing a personal account.

The day the raids came: Stories of survival and resistance to the state terror raids edited by Valerie Morse

This was particularly interesting as the remaining 4 defendants are now in court on various (not terrorism) charges. It was and is a case I have read a lot about that is a brilliant example of the state using its power to stamp out indigenous and other resistance. An inspiring book and a case that continues to shame New Zealand in my view.

Forty Stories by Anton Chekhov:

I enjoyed this. I mainly just love Russian authors.

Interesting. Surprising to hear at the end that she wasn’t still with the guy she ranted and raved about for the whole book.

Untouchable by Mulk Raj Anand

Sad story about the caste system in India and a young man caught in the midst of it.

The profiler: My life hunting serial killers and psychopaths by Pat Brown

The title of this book is incredibly misleading. The cases in this book are ‘typical’ homicides i.e. related to domestic violence, suicide or by known offenders. This also doesn’t match with the conclusion about all the serial killers roaming the US, seeing as none of these cases were about serial killers. Oh dear.

And now I am reading:

which is very good
