“Punjab” = “land of five rivers” and derives from the Persian words ‘panj,’ meaning five, and ‘aab,’ meaning water. The rivers, tributaries of the Indus River, are the Beas, Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, and Sutlej. The five rivers, now divided between India and Pakistan.
